How to make a hoop glider
Aim: Can a hoop glider fly?
Hypothesis: I think it will fly for a couple of metres
You will need
Strips of paper
Straws
Sellotape
Scissors
Method
Step 1: measure one strip up to 13cm long and measure one strip up to 14cm long
Step 2: Sellotape the 14cm piece together by 1cm Then Sellotape the 13cm piece together by 1 cm
Step 3: sellotape the big hoop to one end of the straw Then Sellotape the small hoop to the other end
Results: the hoop glider flew for a few metres and crashed . Variable1: by adding two more straws it flew further than before. Variable2: we took off the small straws and put on one big straw. Variable 3: this time I combined the first two variables. It made no difference at all.
Conclusion: the hoop glider could fly because the air going through the hoop is slower which pushes it up and allows it to fly but the air going over it is faster than the air going through it which pushes it down. The lift has to be equal or greater than the weight of the plane. The thrust has to be equal or greater than the drag of the plane to be able to fly.
